Advance Dermocare Product Recall

As many of our customers are no doubt aware, earlier this week Mars Petcare Australia voluntarily recalled their Advance Dermocare dry dog food product range. This included all 3kg, 8kg and 15kg bags in the Advance Dermocare range. 

This occurred after a number of Australian police dogs fell ill with one having to be euthanised after being diagnosed with megaesophagus. 

Mars Petcare Australia have run hundreds of tests on the Advance Dermocare range and has not at this stage found any link to the condition. Their decision to recall the product range is being done as a precaution while the issue is being further investigated.

So what is Megaesophagus?

Megaesophagus is a condition where the dogs’ oesophagus (the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach), enlarges and prevents them from swallowing and moving food and liquid normally. When megaesophagus occurs it often leads to weight loss and regurgitation, and most dangerously to aspiration pneumonia if the food sitting in the oesophagus is inhaled into the lungs. 

Megaesophagus can be congenital (ie. the dog is born with it), or acquired later in life – although this is not generally linked to food.

What is a voluntary recall?

A voluntary recall occurs when a supplier voluntarily manages their own recall if they become aware that one of their products potentially poses a safety risk.
